The Song of Achilles is a novel built to answer one simple question: why did Achilles mourn Patroclus so intensely? In Homer, Patroclus is a secondary figure—but though he’s minor, his death undoes Achilles. I wanted to explore who Patroclus was, and what he meant to Achilles.
